How to Choose a Domain Name Your Customers Will Actually Remember

Your domain name is the one part of your online presence that customers will type, say out loud, and try to remember. Get it right, and every business card, advertisement, and Google search works harder for you. Get it wrong, and people land on a competitor site — or give up entirely.

Here is the practical checklist we walk through with every Newwave client before a domain gets registered.

1. Keep it short — aim for two to three words

Short names are easier to remember, faster to type on a phone, and fit cleanly on signage and social profiles. If your company name is long, consider a sensible abbreviation rather than squeezing the full legal name into the address bar.

2. Make it pass the phone test

Say the name out loud as if you were giving it to a customer over the phone. If you have to spell it out letter by letter, keep looking. The best domains are spelled exactly the way they sound.

3. Skip hyphens and numbers

Hyphens get forgotten and numbers create confusion — is it the digit 2 or the word two? If the clean version of your name is taken, a short keyword beats a hyphenated compromise almost every time.

4. Pick the right extension

For most Malaysian companies, the decision comes down to three options. A .com signals international ambition and is the default people guess. A .com.my tells visitors you are a Malaysian-registered business, which builds local trust. A .my is shorter and increasingly popular with modern brands. Many of our clients register two and point both at the same website.

5. Think five years ahead

Choose a name that still fits when the business grows. A name tied to one product, one town, or one year can box you in. Your company name, or what you want the company to become, is usually the safest anchor.

6. Check it everywhere, then move fast

Before you commit, check the name across domain extensions and social platforms so your brand stays consistent. Good names get taken every day — when you find one that fits, register it before someone else does.
